To + infinitive after adjectives

Сравните эти два предложения:

Jim doesn’t speak very clearly.

A: It is difficult to understand him.

B: He is difficult to understand.

Смысл предложений A и B одинаков. Однако отметьте, мы говорим `He is difficult to understand.’

Вы можете употреблять конструкцию предложения B после difficult/ easy/ impossible/ hard и некоторых других прилагательных:

— It is not easy to get along with her daughter.

— He is impossible to talk to.

— They were a lovely couple to see.

Вы также можете использовать эту конструкцию после прилагательное + существительное:

— This is a very difficult

question to answer.

— Jill is an interesting person to talk to.

— I enjoyed the football match. It was an exciting game to watch.

Мы употребляем to + infinitive после the first/the second/the third и т. д., а также после the next и the last:

— Gagarin was the first man to travel in a spacecraft.

— Why am I always the last to get the news?

Вы можете употреблять конструкцию to + infinitive после ряда прилагательных, чтобы сказать, как кто-то относится к чему-то. Например:

— I am glad to see you.

— The doctors are pleased to inform you about new toothpaste.

Другие прилагательные, которые можно употреблять подобным образом: happy, delighted, disappointed, amazed, sorry, sad, relieved, astonished.

Отметьте, конструкция — nice of someone to do something. Такая конструкция возможна после ряда прилагательных, включая: nice, mean, silly, polite, generous, kind, stupid, clever, careless.

— How kind of you to let me come!

— It is very generous of this old lady to share her money with us.
