Unless, as long as and provided/ providing
Unless
Рассмотрим ситуацию:
Джо не очень хорошо слышит. Если вы говорите с ним нормальным голосом, он не слышит вас. Если вы хотите, чтобы он услышал, надо кричать.
Joe can’t hear unless you shout.
Это значит: `Joe can hear only if you shout’. Unless означает except if. Unless используется, чтобы сформулировать исключение из того, о чем мы говорим.
Вот еще примеры употребления unless:
— Don’t tell Ann what I said unless she asks you.
— I’ll come tomorrow unless I have to work.
— I wouldn’t eat fish unless I was extremely hungry.
Часто unless используется в предупреждениях:
— We’ll be late unless we hurry.
—
— The man said he would hit me unless I told him where the money was.
Вместо unless можно сказать if… not:
— Don’t tell Ann what I said if she doesn’t ask you.
— We’ll be late if we don’t hurry.
As long as/ provided / providing.
Эти выражения означают but only if :
— You can use my car as long as you drive carefully.
— Travelling by car is convenient provided you have somewhere to park.
— Providing she studies hard, she should pass the examination.
Когда говорите о будущем, не употребляйте will с unless, as long as, provided или providing. Используйте форму настоящего времени:
— We’ll be late unless we hurry.
— Providing she studies hard…
